Funny

This is a true story.
She loaded her bags into the car and then drove to the police station. The sergeant to whom she told the story nearly tore himself in two with laughter. He pointed to the other end of the counter, where four pale men were reporting a car jacking by a mad, elderly woman described as white, less than five feet tall, glasses, curly white hair, and carrying a large handgun.
No charges were filled.

Odd

Okay, am I missing something here? If the satellite is already falling out of control, how in the hell do you shoot it down? It's supposedly already falling out of control on an unknown trajectory!

Of course, from the VERY FIRST DAY I heard this story, I knew it was a cover story for something, as would even the most moderately thinking person. And now I think I know what it is... they want to test their ABM/SDI technology against something moving that fast and something so high up that they could not deny they were doing it because the whole world will see it.

And that's VERY interesting indeed, because that means they are gearing for ICBMs, supposedly NOT a threat from terrorist states. So in terms of gearing up, that leaves whom?

Otherwise, the story makes NO sense. After all, using NASA'a own TLE (two line element) files, an amateur can predict precisely enough where the thing will fall. Not to mention that technically, these days it's almost sort of relatively trivial to (...MORE)

Interesting

I was cruising the Salon archives, when this popped up. I thought it was interesting, as I hadn't heard. Then again, maybe I did hear. My memory never was what it used to be.

Unlikely

Hassidic Jew Shimon Waronker appointed Principal of Bronx school.

Still alive. Ran out or turned around the crips and bloods. Speaks Spanish. Teaching kids to read. Got school off "most dangerous" list. Hasn't been fired yet.

You figure it out.

Nuked? Not quite. Kinda looks like it, though. A "stolen Fark link" (tm), but worth a look.

An amazing guitar 'solo' played on 2 guitars, by one guy. This one is the theme song from 'The Simpsons'.

Interesting

An article from the May, 1950 edition of Popular Mechanics magazine, done as an accompaniment to the soon-to-be-released movie Destination Moon, one of my childhood favorites.

I enjoy parts like the photo caption that states "A technician points out a section of the Atomic Engine, the only feature of the rocket which has not yet been developed". Just when are we gonna have our Atomic Engines, guys?
